aol.pmTHE HISTORICAL HACKING CATALOG

Independent research index / First release

Coverage you can audit.

3477 catalog records. The base catalog preserves no original texts; two supplemental RFC originals are now available. No claim of a complete historical archive.

Checked October 16, 2026. “Discovered” counts records selected from the named sources, not a universal corpus. “Index verified” means a record appears in the inspected source index; it does not mean its content or linked media was checked.

Known denominators

2600 title-index denominator

The publisher’s volumes 1–10 title index contains 814 bibliographic entries. This release imports 813; one apparent personal phone-number title is excluded. This is a selected historical index, not all 2600 articles.

Scheduled talks: exact source counts

Talk selection uses the source tags “DEF CON Official Talk” and “Creator Talk/Panel”. Workshops, contests, demos and social events are not silently counted as talks. Export provenance and gaps

Gaps and next research

2600

813 bibliographic entries from the publisher-hosted title index for volumes 1–10 (1984–1993), plus 126 issue links from the incomplete cover gallery. One title containing an apparent phone number was omitted. The index includes articles, news and letters; authors and full article bodies were not checked. The gallery includes an Autumn 2026 sidebar item but has many historical gaps. No paid material accessed.

DEF CON

1,430 unique scheduled talk/panel records from DEF CON 33–34: 222 main-track talks and 1,208 creator talks/panels. Also 33 annual event-index links (DC1–33). The separate official guide at info.defcon.org permits crawling; the defcon.org archive host disallows OpenAI agents and was not crawled further. Earlier talks, satellite events, recordings, slides and canceled/withheld status remain gaps. A schedule entry is not proof of delivery.

Phrack

Article metadata from all 72 issue contents tables currently exposed by the official site. This measures the selected tables, not every revision, special edition, or surviving copy. Authors and dates follow the publisher’s metadata; contents entries are not necessarily standalone technical papers.

Phone Losers of America

46 regular issue links plus unauthorized issue 099, as enumerated by the publisher. Dates and authors remain unknown unless separately verified. Issue 007 points to a replacement directory; no personal telephone data is imported. Historical satire is not reliable technical guidance.

TEXTFILES.COM

Collection reference only. No current file inventory was verified. Mirroring guidance does not establish blanket rights to the underlying works. Individual-file count and coverage remain unknown.

TOTSE

Collection reference to a third-party historical mirror only. No individual-file inventory imported. Mixed rights and uncertain provenance require item-level review; the mirror is not represented as official.

Update status

Research updates are managed separately from this static release. New research still needs provenance, rights checks, validation and review before publication. There is no continuously running local importer or instantaneous update guarantee.

Machine-readable coverage · Phrack issue source manifest

Expanded archive · 16 October 2026

12,394 conference records · 3,962 technique and evidence records · 18,789 entries in unified search · Conference counts and gaps

The original 3,477-entry catalog remains separately exportable; 1,430 DEF CON records overlap the conference module and appear only once in unified search. Unknown historical denominators remain unknown. Two unchanged historical RFC originals are hosted separately; see the handbooks below.

Two preserved historical RFCs

RFC 1244 and RFC 2196: context, provenance and unchanged plaintext. Whole reproduction permitted under the IETF Trust policy; all original notices retained. Other source works remain metadata and links unless explicitly stated otherwise.
