BBSs, modems, and text culture
Text files traveled with communities. Their titles, author credits, dates, and surviving copies help reconstruct that movement.

A publication designed to circulate
Phrack’s first introduction solicited phreaking and hacking material and described BBS distribution. Its November 1985 publication offers direct evidence of the editorial connection between those subjects. A historical invitation to BBS redistribution does not automatically resolve every modern author’s web-republication rights.

Preserving the surviving record
Jason Scott’s TEXTFILES.COM and BBS documentary work bring preservation into the same story. The present catalog links the collection but has not verified its current file inventory. Copies can differ: preservation requires tracking which version survives and who created it, not assuming a mirror is an official source.
